The Cincinnati Bengals should have won Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers, but when kicker Mike Nugent missed a 36-yard field-goal attempt as time expired in overtime, the team had to settle for a 37-37 tie.
Nugent, who has now converted 11 of 17 attempts on the season and only six of his last 12, made his first three field-goal attempts in the game. However, with a win on the line, he was unable to come through for his team.
Missing a short field-goal attempt like that may make it hard for the kicker to look his teammates in the eye, but several Bengals players stood behind their teammate after the miss. Receiver Mohamed Sanu had no problem voicing his support for the struggling Nugent.
"You've seen Mike hit that so many times, " Sanu said, per Bengals. com's Geoff Hobson. "We have all the confidence in the world in Mike. He's had so many game winners for us. He's human. "
Cincinnati defensive back Adam "Pacman" Jones didn't show the same type of compassion for Nugent.
After the game, Jones reportedly yelled something that could be interpreted as throwing the kicker under the bus.
